If your WordPress-powered site happens to be inflicted with malware and you are feeling any of the above, I understand. The past week has been long for me too. Few things you can do to help relieve the pain.

1. Log a support request with your service provider to scan and clean all instances.
2. When that’s done, logon to phpMyAdmin to edit the admin password (look for wp_users). If you wish, you can use other methods to change the password.
3. Secure your wp files (see Hardening WordPress)
4. Resubmit your site to Google via Google Webmaster Tools

The promise of automatic, login-less access to wifi hotspots could have been the solution to my quiet resent for my 20MB data plan. Alas, it is not meant to be.

Anyway if you have not seen Ellen’s parody of the phone functionality, watch it soon. Who knows when the “cease and desist” thingy may appear.

While I am slightly disappointed that it is released before I can formally recontract my service, I am also glad as this will give them time to upgrade to Android 2.0 (or newer) and 16m colours when I am due for my new handset. Hurrah!

The SBS Bus Guide WinMo app is based on the iPhone’s. And the UI is sweet! It is versatile – you can search by road name, bus number, and bus stop number. You can preset your favourite (or regularly used) bus stops for easy search. You can use GPS to search for nearby stops. Well et cetera. Even though it doesn’t appear to be, it fits WVGA 800×480 beautifully. It does not yet support SMRT routes.

Of course, it is based on Android. So for anyone who is a iPhone or WM fan, this announcement has no meaning. Then again, who knows. Tech-toys have grown to a state where nothing is truly irreplaceable or will last forever. The saying is so applicable in the digital movement – if you live long enough, you will see (insert some tech evolution that is not presently unimaginable). But I digress.

Back in Feb 2008, SE announced Xperia X1 with bells and whistles that dazzled everyone. Then as the year rolled on, HTC and Apple saturated the market and X1 began to feel like soggy old news. I am now fearing the same for X10. With Android 1.6, it has already fallen behind Motorola Droid which is on 2.0. SE will need to pick up speed or risk disappointing the public once again.

Except for the lack of a hardware keyboard, X10 has what I enjoy in a phone. I am a little concerned with the availability of user support e.g. XDA like. Hopefully, the community will sprout soon and fast. And one more thing, I don’t get the fascination of social-media-in-a-phone. It is not chicken biscuit, you know.

1. Have been so caught up with Lumix GF-1

Widgets are not my thing¹. SPB shell has always been decent in usability. This time, it gives a lifestyle spin to the UI using the widget concept in the main screens. The carousel view looks like HTC TouchFlo. If you are a fan of that famous UI, you should enjoy SPB’s latest too. On first launch, it is tad slow (~9s) but subsequently launches are smooth as butter.

Oh I finally loaded the growing panel. Cool application/panel but not useful. Excellent for showing what X1 can do but definitely not for daily use.

1. I cannot even bring myself to load widgets on my new MBP

Though it has been years in the making, the transition is not what I have imagined it to be. I am still paranoid about ruining it with coffee or flying bugs. Ah well that’s me.

Back to customising the new tech baby – Apple MacBook Pro. Yeah.

It may soon be impossible to do so in the US. A new bill to require mobile phones containing digital cameras to make a sound when a photograph is taken has been proposed.

I can see where the sponsor is coming from. I can almost understand the need to safeguard privacy. But seriously. If some weird person wishes to take unauthorised pictures, this shutter thing will not be his or her biggest hurdle.

Dubbed as the Camera Phone Predator Alert Act, how I see it – it should have a function that screams upon the shutter-click, “Your picture has just been captured by [fill in cellphone number]. Contact the police if you do not authorise this act.” Now, that will be an alert.

Since the much needed purchase¹ of the Xperia a month ago, customisation becomes an interesting pastime.

It is my virgin experience with a WinMo phone. I must have spent 70% of my internet bandwidth on XDA and have a serious love-hate relationship with the developers. On one hand, you want to try everything. On the other, you don’t really understand all the steps and are mildly paranoid about conflicts, if any.

Anyway. My X1 is almost fully dressed (or rather, I am getting tired). In alpha order.

1. In case you are sniggering, I almost suffocated in Seoul without a 3G phone. Yes it is a need-buy!
2. For some reason, screen scrolling does not work.
3. Panels are exclusive to X1 at the moment. Not a regular WinMo app

Xperia X1 was officially launched last weekend, have put myself on the waitlist, and still, no news. Everyday, I can only read about the mods and customisations on the forums. Driving myself crazy with a folder full of zip and cab that cannot be fulfilled to their full glory without the transmitter.

I am a sucker for the familiar. I like my mobile number. I like the fact that people whom I have not spoken to for years will be able to call me one day and go, “hey still the same number!” I am sad that way.

Like what a rational person would do, I shopped. The iPod nano black is so tiny. It is very likely be bent out of shape during the honeymoon bliss. It’s rather sad that I have just 5 albums to sync. I am that boring.

Anyway it is rather exhilarating to see “So&So is now your friend” popping up from the system tray. Hey, I have not met most of them for years. How can I, thus, be blamed for setting the homepage to auto-refresh every minute? So far, I’ve only had dinner with one of them since our reunion on FB. I sure hope this will continue.

It’s was a mind-blowing experience. Imagine drinking a slurpee at the speed of saying Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Yes it was brain freeze! I’m now able to revive the zine that I was working on and of course recycle all the web layouts that I’ve used before. Glorious! The best part, I have the photos of the mindless trips that I went on over the year in dreary England.

It is totally an unnecessary purchase. Well, only to satisfy my own vanity, and from that standpoint, it may actually be necessary. What I did not expect is to be told, after making the payment, that the ordered&confirmed color-of-my-choice is no longer available.

The fact that I made up my mind in 1/4 of the time I would normally take to decide on any purchases above $50 hinted that I would not take it lying down.

I wonder: Do sales people find it empowering to psyche customers out of what they have already paid for?

A colleague asked, “Do you blog?” I am unsure. Does she want to know if I blog like what the newspapers have portrayed? Or like what I remember it to be?

As I unpacked a time capsule (shipped from Nottingham 3 years ago), the cards and letters from people I have gotten to know through the web are really amazing. Not discounting what is going on now (given the little information I have), as a true Cancerian, I believe we had it better.

Working and relying on computer software only mean one thing – virus checks and updates. Ok that’s two. And running updates mean one more thing – inserting cd1 and cd2 ten times over. My fingers ached after the third time, wonder how is the rom doing.

And so PC Advisor is going under. I distinctly remember talking about the crowdiness of the IT section at the newspaper stand. Personally, it’s not that there aren’t enough people reading the magazines, there aren’t enough gadgets/ inventions/ interviews/ promotions to share among the printed matter.

If you secretly enjoy drawing flowcharts (using the right symbols) or drafting the floorplan of your dream home, SmartDraw maybe worth considering. Especially when a PPT screen cannot handle the extra-large process flowcharts..

Made a purchase. Not sure if it is out of good judgement. I am enjoying the complexities of learning the functions of a new toy. Giving up this proved to be a harder task than I imagined. The deletion of words and numbers with a detached mind can be sobering. Desperate times lead to desperate measures.

Every now and then, someone will stand up and throw meringue pies at blogging engines. Frankly, I have no clue what makes WP better than TXP than MT than Blogger and you get my drift. In case you have arrived at this site looking for over-the-top reviews on the tools, you probably would prefer to look up this comparison chart.

A visit to an electrical trade-in shop opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. Five minutes into the shop and I was already asking for the trade-in value of my mobile phone and eyeing perspective second hand ones like a hawk. No marketing plan required. Lock em Rack em and Stack em. Am convinced I will be back there very soon. A modern state of the art pawn shop cum barter trading if you asked me. Not for the weak hearted.
